Style inspiration: Rachel Bilson

I’m not usually one to look to celebrity culture for style inspiration. I much prefer “real people” like the many, many style bloggers I follow. But if I had to name one U.S. celebrity whose personal style I adore….I’d overwhelming say Rachel Bilson. Though I’m not a fan of her show Hart of Dixie on the CW, I was an uber O.C. fan back in the day. Remember that show guys? Oh man, takes me back to my college days so hard. Anyway, it was that show that put her on the grid for me and I’ve been a fan ever since. Aside from her on point red carpet choices, she always looks effortlessly chic even when shlepping around running errands or walking her dog (she’s def a paparazzi favorite). Whatever the time of day, she never misses. So, friends, as an ode to miss Bilson, here’s a round-up of (mostly affordable) pieces to help bite her style. So who’s your celebrity style muse? Are you girl-crushed out on Rachel like me? Hope everyone is having a fabulous (short) week so far!

The scenery that provides a backdrop as you take a photograph can be  transformative, it instantly takes you places. So when I ended up in one of my very favorite places, the lovely Williamsburg Waterfront Park in Brooklyn the other day, I had to seize the opportunity to snap some photos there with the pretty city skyline at my back. Even in it’s blurry landscape (thank you nifty fifty lens!), it’s  dreamy-looking. After you’ve lived in/near NYC for awhile, people always ask “does seeing the skyline ever get old?” Well, the clear answer is yes. When you see it every single day and it is no longer new and different, you do kind of “get used to it” and the novelty wears off. But it’s funny, because while honeymooning in the Greek islands last summer, my husband and I were horseback riding along the coast of Paros and were absolutely blown away by the scenic beauty of the Aegean sea and the rocky volcanic cliffs tumbling into it’s waters and the iconic sunsets that took our breath away. When chatting with the natives (who spoke English of course!), we made the same remarks we hear in NY all the time, “this scenery is so picturesque and breathtaking, it must never get old!” But ironically, they replied…we’re used to it. And then went on to explain that they wish they could see all the exciting sights that New York City has to offer and expressed how they can’t imagine waking up and seeing that great skyline everyday. Life is funny like that. Though, while it is absolutely a certainty that one grows so familiar with their surroundings that they become ordinary, no matter how extraordinary they are,  at moments like this one as I stood beside Manhattan’s towering landscape I am reminded: It is always magnificent. It is always breathtaking. It is always beautiful.

The city’s iconic skyline and beautiful bridges have made their way onto many a print product as we all well know. Here’s a look at a few my fave paper pretties perfect for those who dwell here and those who wish they did:

Wishy-washy weather / American Idol

Remember a month or so ago, I said I just wasn’t ready to let go of my tights? Bah! Now we’re in the middle of May and I’m completely bitter about the fact that I desperately want to not have to wear tights, but still need to, by account of this silly, indecisive, non-Spring we’re having! Knowing that an outfit like this would surely look better without the tights is something I’ll have to swallow. We’ve had a couple of dazzling days for sure, but I am truly ready to show some skin sans legwear on more than one occasion as one should when it’s nearly June. But I guess I should bite my tongue because it’s becoming more and more obvious everyday that we are going to move swiftly into the blazing hot heat of Summer before we know it and then I’ll be complaining about frizzy hair and sticking to my clothes and sweating before I even step out of the shower. I guess I’ll take what little Spring weather I can get, even if it involves a few extra layers.

In other news, my loyalty to American Idol must be admitted. Yes, people, I do watch TV and what my husband likes to call “brainwash television,” I find inexplicably gripping. Among the others I regularly tune into are New Girl (I mean, hello, total Zooey girl crush), Mad Men (hello awesome vintage fashion!), I even found myself remarkably addicted to Spartacus (a gal can look at those hard bodies, right?). I’ve also been known to (guiltfully) DVR Keeping up with the Kardashians and The Carrie Diaries on occasion. As I sat watching last night’s 12th season Idol finale, I couldn’t help but think that it’s not the awkward judge banter or the often ridiculous plot-lines that entertain me so much, but I am as equally, if not more so, watching what they’re wearing. I mean, anyone who’s ever tuned into Sex and the City knows it can be equated to fashion porn for the right set of eyes. So judge me if you will but here’s my round-up of some Idol fashion throughout the season that got my attention:

Jessie J’s Kenzo Floral Print Jumpsuit: She wore it much more risque in the finale than the runway look with the front all open like that, but I’m a fan of any and all playsuit.

Lazero by far had the most fashion wow moments. I mean, he always looked so dapper in his bright colored vintage suits. I feel like they had the most fun with his style on the show.

Kree’s white blazer (on right)….gimme!

Guys in vintage velvet suits and crazy bow-ties? Fashion-candy.

Amber (2nd from right) rocked this snug, long-sleeved dress and I was enamored with the details. The black pattern you see there is actually the black lining showing through intricate cutouts in the white fabric. Stunning!

Umm, have I mentioned I’m a sucker for playsuits? This denim one Amber wore belted was next level:

Speaking of playsuits, this white in front/black in back one stole my heart. Fave look of the season I think. So chic.

Did I leave out and standouts? Let me know your favorite Idol look! Happy Friday everyone!

I do not believe there is another print, in all the land, that I love more than polka dots disguised as hearts! Whether it be all over a blouse like seen here, all over jeans (remember these?), or all over shorts (like these here in this post)…I lust after every item I see! Just like their first cousin, the polka dot, they are just so very versatile and can be paired with virtually any item from my closet. I love the layering possibilities of this blouse…it looks great under pinafores and jumpers over a tank and tied into a knot with denim cut-offs or even worn over a maxi dress…the options are endless. And I love the subtle punch the print brings without being overly busy. And is there nothing better than a pop of red with an otherwise totally monochromatic black and white outfit? I think not.

And while I’m at it, check out these funky fun heart-adorned bridal shower invitations by Wiley Valentine. The future Mrs. did the illustrations. Gotta love a hands-on and artistic bride with a penchant for primary colors!

Happy Hump Day everyone! xo
