I spent a lovely long weekend soaking up the sun, eating way too many sweets, riding on the boat, and floating in a tube at DeRuyter Lake (in upstate NY) in celebration of my amazing parents and family friends’ 35th wedding anniversary. What better way to spend your days than relaxing with loved ones surrounded by beautiful natural surroundings?
It’s been a few days since I posted and I apologize for my absence for the blogosphere (I promise to be back to regular outfit posts tomorrow)! But that usually only means one thing…I’ve been busy…having fun! Which is totally excusable in my book. Yesterday was just so packed with goodness I just had to share this fantastic day with you. It was just one of those magical Saturday’s that stick with you for a while cause they’re so good. If you follow me on Instagram, you’ve seen a sneak peek but here was my Instaweeknd.
Penny got his Summer haircut in the morning so when we picked up handsome from the groomer, we decided to stop by our favorite old-fashioned ice cream shops for a cone. The dress is Tulle via Crossroads Trading Co.
Then we strolled around Williamsburg (Brooklyn), poked into a few shops, and checked out the art for sale from local street artists/vendors. Then we had drinks with one of my best friends at a dog-friendly bar with a cozy backyard. She brought her adorable Boston Terrier with her. Williamsburg was amidst a “Williamsburg Walks” event where the main street is closed to vehicles to allow pedestrians to walk freely and bits of sod are laid on the pavement to create little green spaces where people literally just sit and sip iced coffees and what have you right in the middle of the street. It’s really a sight to see! Williamsburg is one of my favorite places to hang out on any day of the week.
I put 2 tickets to see one my all-time favorite bands, the Postal Service, in JC’s Easter basket back in April and have been counting the days ever since. The show was at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn so we hit that next. JC has very eclectic taste in music but wasn’t really familiar with many indie bands before he met me. That’s one of my favorite thing about our relationship is that I’ve gotten to introduce him to the music I love and he has introduced me to some great music I had never discovered before.
We had a bit of a time snafu in Williamsburg when I decided that we should walk to meet my friend for drinks not realizing it was much more of distance than I thought so we ended up not having enough time to get dinner like I had thought we would before the show (oopsydoops). But as luck would have it, this little gem The Elbow Room, was waiting for us at the Barclays Center with the most scrumptious infused Mac n Cheese I’ve ever tasted! I had chicken tinga mac with avocado and pickled onions and JC had Buffalo Chicken mac. Umm, only two things to say really…whoever thought of this concept is a freaking genius and I will certainly be back.
Waiting in line for a beer. A live music essential : )
Wrist band in tact. Chippy nails regrettable.
Be still my heart. I’d marry Ben Gibbard if given the chance (if I wasn’t already married of course!) if for no other reason than the close proximity he shares to my girl Zooey Deschanel (yes that’s what I was thinking about when I saw him in the flesh) but on top of the fact that he’s married to my biggest girl crush ever, he’s amazingly talented and SO fun to watch perform. The show was next level awesome and we were literally THIS close to the stage. Definitely one of the best, most fun, shows i’ve ever been to and one I’ll remember forever, especially because I got to see it with my best mate.
Hope you’re weekend was as splendid as mine! If you don’t already follow me on Instagram…I’d love it if you did! My handle is @paperandpretties!
I’d be lying if I said that every pattern works together, sometimes I think it goes too far and gets crazy. But whether we like it or not friends, mixing patterns is trending hard and I’m on board. I can feel my mom cringing at the very thought of it. There is an IF though…the patterns have to be somewhat recessive and not fighting with each other. Polka dots on denim is pretty subtle of a pattern and though these jeans are floral, the color is monochromatic and gray, not too loud. I added in some pops of color with a headscarf and bold lipstick and I’m good to go! My camera battery pack decided to exhaust itself completely mid-shoot so I just barely was able to snap the best part of this top…the awesome back! Any denim top laden with dots and I’m a fan but an interesting and unique detail like that is a twist I can’t resist. A little peep show without being scandalous? Sign me up.
Hope you’re having a lovely day! I’ve taken the day off from work on Friday so my work week ends tomorrow and I couldn’t be happier. Woot woot!
I’m not usually one to look to celebrity culture for style inspiration. I much prefer “real people” like the many, many style bloggers I follow. But if I had to name one U.S. celebrity whose personal style I adore….I’d overwhelming say Rachel Bilson. Though I’m not a fan of her show Hart of Dixie on the CW, I was an uber O.C. fan back in the day. Remember that show guys? Oh man, takes me back to my college days so hard. Anyway, it was that show that put her on the grid for me and I’ve been a fan ever since. Aside from her on point red carpet choices, she always looks effortlessly chic even when shlepping around running errands or walking her dog (she’s def a paparazzi favorite). Whatever the time of day, she never misses. So, friends, as an ode to miss Bilson, here’s a round-up of (mostly affordable) pieces to help bite her style. So who’s your celebrity style muse? Are you girl-crushed out on Rachel like me? Hope everyone is having a fabulous (short) week so far!
head scarf: vintage
denim shirt: h&m (old)
sweater: cos (thrifted)
Yesterday was another pretty chilly day in NYC, still very much sweater weather. So I took the opportunity to don this dotted sweater! I’ve always been a fan of a good dot. And this sweater is pretty neutral so it’s versatile. I paired it with some pops of color with the bag, shoes and lip to give it some life. I’ve actually had that vintage headscarf for years now but recently just found it. Don’t you love when that happens? It’s like it’s new again.
Speaking of dots…lots and lots of dots…I just love these brilliant confetti wedding programs and invitations.

What a perfect way to make sure all your guests are strapped with confetti to throw at just the right moment when celebrating a special event? We did something similar at my own wedding and I can’t express enough how fun and hilarious it was, I was so happy we did. Not only did it make for amazing pictures, but walking through an entourage of paper confetti with my new husband, hand in hand, was so special. If you’re planning an event in the near future, why not take a note from these fine examples? Your guests will love it.
Here’s me and JC getting bombarded post nuptials…
Here starts the beginning of my brand new blogging adventure! Hope you’ll come along for the ride. This photo of me is from my wedding! Why not start there right? I wed on a very happy day on August 4th, 2012 (wow, I can’t believe it’s been 8 months already!!) in the same tiny chapel that my parents were married in Ithaca, NY and we danced the night away at a lovely barn reception. A dream come true for me! It marked the beginning of a new chapter in my life so it seems appropriate to start this new blog with a photo from that day. I wore this beautiful lace dress by David’s Bridal (the most vintage looking dress I could find without actually buying vintage!) and I wore a real flower in my hair (I wish I could remember the name!). Like you hear over and over, my story is the same. It was the very first dress I tried on and I just knew it was the one. I didn’t buy it right away though. The day after I tried it on, my mom and I left for a trip to Italy. Over the 10 days I was vacationing, I couldn’t stop thinking and dreaming about it! So when I got back home, one of the first things I did was go buy that dress!
If you’re interested in knowing a little more about my love story, my engagement photos were featured on Le Magnifique wedding blog, so you can check it our right here! This and all our wedding photos were taken by the wonderful Three Nails Photography.
Oh, and p.s. yes, those are my real eyelashes : )
